What is Candida?

Do you generally feel unwell and does the idea of a bout in the bedroom leave you cold? You possibly have candida.

Candida, a member of the fungus family, is a, excess of yeast in the body. The presence of yeast in the body is not as weird as it sounds, on the contrary, your colon can maintain a small amount of yeast to counteract any other bacteria that is present. Candida albicans is yeast that is often present in throat, intestines and genitalia.

The yeast and bacteria live in symbiosis. The problem creeps in when the symbiosis between the yeast and bacteria is upset and the good bacteria are overwhelmed by the yeast. This creates and imbalance in the body and gives rise to a number of symptoms.

Candida can affect all aspects of your physiology: the nervous system, immune system, reproductive system and stomach.

What are the types of candida?

Thrush: This affects the wet surface around your lips, the inside of your cheeks and on the tongue and palate.
Esophagitis: Candida infections in the mouth can spread to the oesophagus and give rise to esophagitis.
Skin infections: It can appear on skin that receives little ventilation and is unnaturally wet (Diaper rash, athlete’s foot, etc.).
Vaginal yeast infections: It is estimated that 75% of all woman has had vaginal candida infection at least once in their lives. Up to 45% get it two or more times.

Is it easy to get rid of candida?

In a generally healthy individual with thrush, skin Candidiasis or vaginal yeast infections the candida can be cured with a short treatment (usually a single dose) of anti-fungal medication.

Thus superficial candida can be go away with correct treatment without doing any permanent damage. If you do not, however, complete your course of medication or your health worsens during treatment, the infection can return.

People with a weakened immune system can find it more difficult to get rid of candida and run the risk of getting a recurring infection.

How can it influence my sex life?

A vaginal yeast infection can have many unpleasant symptoms that will make hubby think twice before he brings the crown jewels close to it. The following symptoms can occur:

• You have an abnormal vaginal secretion. It is usual whitish grey in colour and has the appearance of cottage cheese.
• There is a bad smell – almost sweet of bready.
• The vaginal area, including the vagina and vulva, is can become red, sore and irritated during a yeast infection

If hubby turns up his nose, just imagine how you must feel during this experience. You will probably experience the following:

A lox sex drive: In many cases a vaginal yeast infection can affect your libido or the desire to have sex. Although there is no concrete biological reason for this, doctors reckon that it is linked to the depression experienced during this time.

Pain and discomfort: A vaginal yeast-infection is more likely to be irritating rather than painful, but it can still cause an intense, burning pain during and after sex. There is also a constant itching present. These symptoms causes women limit or completely avoid sex.

The contagious factor: Like most infections, vaginal yeast is contagious and can be transmitted during sexual intercourse to your male partner. But, the possibility of contagion is a small 10-15%. Yet for many couples it is still better to say no thank you.
